I have to admit, the older I get, and the more I interact with the human world … the less I get humans. We are the only animal that actually create reasons for our actions AFTER the fact, and then justify them no matter how ridiculous or self-serving the reason may be. Worse yet, we actually can fool OURSELVES into believing our own bullshit!
Death is a fundamental part of life. Death by force is included in this. Killing is a fundamental part of survival. However … except for with humanity … there are simple and direct reasons for it. Killing to eat. Or killing to not be eaten. Only humanity has taken that to a whole different level. As a matter of fact, as far as I can tell, these days killing for survival is by far the SMALLEST reason for humans to kill.
Morality is ultimately man’s way of justifying what he wants to do.
We kill for profit. We kill for power. We kill to make a point. We kill out of anger; jealousy; rage. We kill because someone else told us to. We even kill for sport. Yet how many who live in the “civilized” world can actually say they even know someone who has killed for pure survival? Unless you are pals with some indigenous folks from less developed parts of the world … I would say most of us could not say that.
So why do we pick and choose which kind of killing is ok? Why do we need it written in both religious and secular law? It seems to me that there are basically two “acceptable” reasons … the ones that are actually “natural”. Right now I have never been so disappointed in humanity. We have turned justification into an art form, and get so mired in lines of morality that we seem to have forgotten the simple, obvious “rights and wrongs” of life.
Right now … when we can get by the horrors of Miley Cyrus having a personality and an attitude … the most pressing subject of the human world is if America should get involved in the Syrian Conflict. I won’t get into the politics of that … my question is simpler. When did we start setting limits of what level of unnecessary killing is acceptable behavior? As far as I am concerned … the moment that civilians started dying over a power struggle that most people aren’t even directly involved in, the WHOLE WORLD should have stepped in. War is evil … no matter how we look at it. At least soldiers have kind have signed up for the right to die for lines on a map and testosterone battles. But the everyday folk who are just living their life did NOT.
If people want to shed the blood of OTHER people who want to shed blood … all to serve the purposes of SOMEONE ELSE … then go to an unpopulated area somewhere and have at it. Leave the rest of us out of it! In the mean time, why is it only a true horror now that chemical weapons may or may not be involved. So basically “who gives a shit about other humans, as long as I personally am not threatened?”
Wake up world! If we want to actually improve the human world, we have to get rid of this concept of US and THEM. We have to stop justifying the unjustifiable just because it eases our conscience. We have to stop letting the leaders of the world, who ultimately really only care about themselves … dictate what is right and wrong for the billions who are NOT the leaders. We all know right from wrong … maybe it is time we started demonstrating that we actually UNDERSTAND it!
I don’t know about you, but I think it is time we reclaimed our social conscience.
